Eleanor Saltonstall papers, 1911-1926; bulk: 1911-1919.

Papers of Eleanor "Nora" Saltonstall, kept mostly while serving with the American Red Cross in France during World War I. Letters written home to her father and family members and miscellaneous papers, Oct. 1917- Mar. 1919, describe work with the Bureau of Refugees and Relief and then a Red Cross dispensary in Paris, and from Jan. 1918 from the western front in France where she served with Mrs. Charles Daly's Auto-Chir No. 7, an American Red Ross mobile hospital unit attached to the French army. Nora served as Mrs. Daly's assistant, as the unit's secretary and housekeeper, and later as chauffeur. Also, two diaries, one kept at home in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and while traveling in Europe, 1911-1915, and one kept 1916 until 15 July 1919, which covered her time in France and a later camping trip (June-July 1919) to the western United States. Nora died of typhoid fever in Portland, Ore., 2 Aug. 1919. The collection includes a Bride's Gift Book (1926) of Muriel Gurdon Saltonstall Lewis, listing wedding gifts.
